A Pikeville Ky native, John Clay grew up in a firmly Christian household with a bluegrass lovin’, strip minin’ father blasting his tiny child brains every morning with Ricky Skaggs, Bill Monroe, Tony Rice, etc. Naturally Clay took to music early learning basic chord structures on a mandolin and choppin’ away with a bunch of old men. After a stint in punk/hardcore during his teens-early 20’s, more seasoned writers like Haggard, Townes, Hubbard, and bands like Drive By Truckers, Whiskeytown, Lucero started finding their way to his record player.
In 2013 John Clay started writing/performing in Louisville Ky and the surrounding region. In 2014 he won the Made in 502 Singer Songwriter competition and promptly hit the studio with master producer/engineer Tom Curtis to cut his debut EP “Now It’s Time” which will be released later this year on Eastwood Records.
